Tenth Annual Reunion of the Hargis Family—A Happy Day.

At the Old Homestead.

Pleasant gathering of a large family circle and an elegant spread under the grand old oaks.

The tenth annual reunion of the Hargis family was held at the home of Capt. R. R. Hargis, the irrepressible and popular conductor of the Western and Atlantic railroad, near Cass Station, on Saturday last, May 27 th.

This place is the old family homestead, and was settled by Mr. Milton Hargis in 1839. Mr. Hargis came to Bartow county, then Cass, in 1838, from North Carolina, and in 1839 built a temporary house where the family residence now stands. It is a beautiful location, situated upon a hill, and sloping in the rear to a fine spring and meadow, where Capt. Hargis has a range of fish ponds from which he supplies his table with fresh fish at his pleasure.

The home is surrounded by fine old oaks of the original forest, and is indeed an ideal country home.

The 28 th of May is the birthday of Mr. Milton Hargis, the father of the family, and this is the day his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren assemble at the old homestead to celebrate, but as it came on Sunday this year Saturday was chosen for the occasion. The father has been dead many years, but his children honor the day in which he first saw the light of the world, and last Saturday’s reunion was held for the purpose of celebrating his eighty-fourth birthday.

There are five brothers and two sisters, of this interesting family, and all of them were present last Saturday.

Mrs. W. M. Loveless, of this city, is the eldest, and has three children all of whom were present.

The next is Mr. T. V. Hargis, of Kingston, with five children and two grand-children all present.

Next is Mrs. E. M. Gilreath, of Cartersville, who has six children, four of whom were present. She has also several grand-children.

Capt. R. R. Hargis is the next representative and has a family of six, four boys and two girls.

Mr. W. H. Hargis has no children.

Mr. O. P. Hargis, of Rome, was present with two of his seven children.

The last is Mr. J. F. Hargis who has seven children and all were present.

Miss Lavinia Hargis, who makes her home with Capt. R. R. Hargis, is a sister of his father, and is an honored guest on these occasions.

Besides these there were quite a number of other relatives and friends of the family, who ran the number present up to more than a hundred.

Long tables had been arranged under the trees in front of the house, and at the hour of noon the ladies opened the numerous baskets and spread their contents upon the tables. And such a dinner. There was everything that heart could wish or tongue suggest, and prepared to tempt the appetite of an epicure. There was turkey, chicken, pork, mutton, kid and beef, cooked in every style, and with bread and sweets of all kinds, it was a dinner to satisfy every desire.

After dinner the party assembled upon seats arranged for them and listened to addresses from Cols. John W. Akin and T. J. Lyon both of whom had many pleasant words for the occasion. These were followed by Capt. R. R. Hargis, Mr. Munday and Mr. J. F. Hargis. After this there were several songs, in which all joined and it was a happy chorus.

The day was beautiful, just suited to the occasion, and it is a remarkable fact that the weather has always favored these reunions with bright, sunny days. It was a joyous, happy reunion, showing the love and esteem of this large family, one for the other, and it is pleasant to be present and witness the genial good feeling which pervades the whole family.
