Another Old Citizen Gone.

Thomas Allen Word. Died, at his residence in this city, on Sunday morning last, Mr. Thomas A. Word, aged 62 years, 5 months, 2 days.

There are but few citizens in this county who did not know the subject of this sketch. Coming to this, then Cass, county with the earliest settlers, he was, indeed a pioneer, and since that time he has mingled feely and familiarly with the people of his adopted county, who soon learned to love and admire his many noble qualities of head and heart.

He was born in Laurens district, S. C., January 4, 1818, came to Georgia in 1828, lived at Decatur about six years, and came to Cass county in March 1834. For several years he engaged in mercantile pursuits in Cassville. He was then made Clerk of the court of the ordinary, and in January 1852 was elected the first ordinary of this county. In January 1860 he was elected clerk of the superior court of this county, which office he held continuously until the time of his death. His sickness was protracted several months—first it was rheumatism, resulting in some character of fever, the immediate cause of his death being inflammation of the stomach. And thus passed away one of our oldest and best citizens. Kind and generous almost to a fault, he was a general favorite. If he had an enemy in the world, his friends do not know of it. He was an honest man. He guarded zealously the reputation of his friends; it being a rule of his life to speak well of his neighbors or speak not about them at all. He died expressing his hope and trust in God. He leaves his ever faithful, true wife, three children, and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
