Death of a Good Citizen.

At Pine Log on last Thursday morning, September 15th 1898, after a lingering illness of several years, Mr. Alsey A. Vincent departed this life. Aged eighty-seven years six months and eight days. He was born in Madison county, Georgia, March 7th, 1811. Come to Bartow county in 1835. Has lived at Pine Log since 1838. He was married three times, first to Miss Martha Upshaw, second to Mrs. Jane Bell and third to Miss Margarett McEver. He was highly esteemed and much honored by his neighbors and fellow citizens.

He was a man of clean, strong character and firm in his convictions. He was a successful farmer, was honest and strictly trustworthy. He stood foremost in the Masonic fraternity, having been a very true Mason for more than thirty years. He leaves surviving him twelve children, to mourn their great loss.

Mr. Vincent was for six successive years a prominent member of the board of county commissioners of Bartow county. Some time before his soul took its flight to the world beyond he said to his family and others, “I am willing to go, all is right with me.”

Alsey A. Vincent dead! How solemn is death in its gradual approach. How mournful even when anticipated, but under any circumstances, how impressively it enforces the lesson, “Be ye also ready.” There is no doubt that the deceased was ready, and that his lamp was trimmed and burning, and at the voice of God he entered his sweet home in heaven. His family and friends may be in tears, but all tears are wiped forever from his eyes. To them earth may seem wearisome, but he is where the “weary are at rest.” He has entered the upper temple to go no more out forever. With him the pilgrimage of life is closed and futurity opens to his eyes the radiance of a sublime state of being, amid the splendors of which the vision of earthly friends is lost in endless perspection.
