Death of Mrs. McDaniel

The step-mother of Ex-Governor H. D. McDaniel peacefully passes away.

On Friday, at 3 o’clock, the morning of the 4 th, Mrs. L. C. McDaniel, widow of the late L. O. McDaniel, Sr., and stepmother of Ex-Gov. Henry D., and of Mr. Ira O. McDaniel, Jr., died at the residence of the latter at Allatoona. Her first husband was Colonel Samuel J. Wilkes, of Anderson, S. C., who fell gallantly at the first battle of Manassas, and their son is Col. Samuel W. Wilkes, who, reared here, is now contracting agent of Clyde’s Charleston line of steamers. Though taken most suddenly with her illness only the day before, Colonel Wilkes reached her side by the first train, on Thursday, at 10 p. m., and rendered the last sad offices of filial devotion. After resting over night at his home in West End, Atlanta, the remains were carried to Anderson, S. C., for final interment.

Mrs. McDaniel was 64 years old, and up to her late husband’s death had resided here almost continuously since the close of the war.
