Two Children Die as Fire Destroys Home at Acworth

Acworth, Georgia, March 12 – Two small children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howell were burned to death and a third child was rescued just in the nick of time late Saturday afternoon when the farm house in which the family resided four miles south of here was destroyed by flames during the absence of the parents.

The dead are: Horace, 3 years old, and Inez, three months old.

Josie Lou Howell, a two year old daughter, was rescued unhurt.  Harry Black, 24 years old, a well known resident of the county, however, was burned severely in making the rescue.

According to reports reaching Acworth, Mr. Howell was at work at a nearby sawmill and Mrs. Howell was at a neighboring store at the time of the fire.

The fire was discovered by Mr. Black, who was passing along the highway near the house.  Seeing the flames, he went to the house, and failing to rouse anyone, entered.

He stated he discovered the children in a room that was a mass of flames.  He said he snatched up Josie Lou and attempted to grab Horace, but the youngster eluded him and rolled under the bed.  Mr. Black then rushed out of the house with the little girl.  He attempted to go back into the room to rescue Horace and the baby, but was driven back by the flames, he said.

The bodies of the children had not been recovered from the debris late tonight.

Citizens of Acworth tonight also were raising a purse, which will be given to Mr. Black as a token of the community’s appreciation for his heroism.

[NOTES: The story goes on to tell of other acts of heroism by Harry Black, as well as his description of the rescue.  Parents are Robert Howell and (Mary) Lula Bryson.]
