James Harris Dead

Mr. Jim Harris, age 75 years old, died at his home near Bartow Lumber Company's plant up the river on February 3rd, and the funeral was held February 5th, the interment being at Costner Graveyard on the John Shinall place.

Mr Harris was born in North Carolina and he moved to Georgia about 30 years ago. He lived up the river for many years and followed mining as his life occupation and was quite active in his work up to the time of his death.

His wife preceded him in death eight years ago, but the following children survive him: Mrs Adaline Andrews, Mrs John H. Lanham, Mrs Bart Cowan, Mrs Joe Shinall and Mr. Sylvania Harris.

[Notes: James Harris was in Spartanburg, SC in the 1860 Census.  James Harris was in Yancey County, NC in 1870 Census next to his brother William Harris.  In the 1880 Census he was in Bartow County, Georgia.
James Harris served in the civil war. He was in Company K Holcombs Legion of Spartanburg, SC. He joined in Spartanburg, SC in 1861 and was taken prisoner at Stoney Creek, Va. in May of 1864. He was taken to the Federal Prison at Elmyra, New York where he was held until October of 1864 when he was exchanged and sent to Savannah and had to make his way home from there. He drew a pension in Bartow County, Ga and stated that he had never fully recovered in his shoulder from the inoculations he was given while he was a prisoner.]
