Five Men Killed Tifton, Ga., April 30. – Five men were killed and three injured, one of whom will probably die, in a boiler explosion here this morning at 4:45 o’clock. The explosion occurred in the saw mill of J. N. Bray & Co. The dead are: Luther Clair, fireman; Hugh Chambers, Gus Nicholson, Jack Casleman, Will Houston (colored). The injured are: J. C. Raine, lumber inspector, may die; Wesley McPhaul, and an unknown negro. Many buildings in the vicinity of the mill were wrecked by the explosion, while the saw mill of Bray & Co., was almost demolished. One-half of one of the boilers was blown 200 yards. The cause of the explosion is not known. It occurred immediately after the whistle blew for the men to enter the mill for the day’s work. The loss is about $15,000 with no insurance. |
