Murder at Stilesboro.

Murders and homicides seem to be the order of the day.  Every paper one reads recites a case or two of one of these.  We have to chronicle this week the commission of a murder at Stilesboro last Saturday night between seven and eight o’clock.  A difficulty arose between Ben Dobbs, alias Ben Milner, and Steve Cannon, both colored.  The statement is to the effect that Steve Cannon gave Ben Dobbs “the damn lie!” whereupon Ben asked Steve if he meant what he said.  Steve replied that he did, and then Ben said, “Come out of doors and I’ll settle with you quick!”

The two men got up and went out and in a few seconds the report of a pistol was heard, when a boy stepped to the door and said that Ben had shot Steve.  When parties went to see Steve he was swinging to the paling and when he was asked “what was the matter,” he replied that “Ben had shot him.”  No words were heard between the parties after they went out of the house.  Upon examination, Cannon was found to be shot with a small ball, entering just above the left nipple, going nearly centrally through one rib, cutting the artery just above the heart, from the effects of which he immediately died.

The coroner held an inquest on Sunday at 10 o’clock and the verdict has not yet been retuned.  Ben Dobbs is still at large.
