Obituary.

BALAAM BRIDGES, Esq., of Bartow county, departed this life at his residence on the 9th of July.  The deceased was born January 31st, 1847, was 32 years, 5 months and 9 days old at the time of his death.

The writer has known Mr. Bridges for many years, and takes pleasure in testifying to the sterling worth of this good neighbor and friend.  He joined the Baptist church at Rowland Springs eight or nine years ago, and he remained a devoted member until he died.  He was a truly consistent man, always ready and willing in every good cause.  As a husband and father he was devoted and fond—as a son, his mother remarked “he was always a good boy.”  His engagements were always promptly met—his word was as good as his bond.  He had many beautiful traits of character, and the writer has never known a man in any rank of life who tried harder to do his duty to society and to his family than Mr. Bridges.  His neat little home was the result of his toil and skill, and his industrious character is a good example to his neighbors and friends.  When death came he was resigned and patient, willing to give his spirit to God, who bestowed it.  Rev. Mr. Headden discoursed at his grave in the most touching manner, and every heart was filled with sympathy for the bereaved family who mourned his untimely death.  Our loss is his gain, and we have the brightest evidence of his acceptance with God.

Earth is poorer in giving up such a good citizen, but heaven has gained another saint, who awaits a re-union with the loved ones he left behind to struggle with the cares of this world.  He had faith in God, who has promised to shield the fatherless and the widow, and to answer the prayers of his believing children, and we rejoice in the hope that the example and precepts of this good man will bear fruit in another world.  –R. A. F.
